Carnival of SoulsYear: 1962 Director: Herk HarveyCarnival of Souls is a film in the vein of Night of the Hunter: artistically ambitious, from a first-time director, but largely overlooked in its initial release until its rediscovery years later. Granted, it’s not the masterpiece of Night of the Hunter, but it’s a chilling, effective, impressive little story of ghouls, guilt and restless spirits. The story follows a woman (Candace Hilligoss) on the run from her past who is haunted by visions of a pale-faced man, beautifully shot (and played) by director Herk Harvey. As she seemingly begins to fade in and out of existence, the nature of her reality itself is questioned. Carnival of Souls is vintage psychological horror on a miniscule budget, and has since been cited as an influence in the fever dream visions of directors such as David Lynch. To me, it’s always felt something like a movie-length episode of The Twilight Zone, and I mean that in the most complimentary way I can. Rod Serling would no doubt have been a fan. —Jim Vorel62. His Girl FridayYear: 1940 Director: Howard HawksSpecial effects have become so sophisticated that many of us have probably forgotten how much pure amazement you can wreak with a great story and a script that doesn’t let up for one second. This amazing, dizzyingly paced screwball comedy by Howard Hawks stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, and takes us back into two of the decade’s hallmark preoccupations: The “remarriage comedy” and the intrigue and obsessiveness of the newspaper world. The minute Russell’s Lindy Johnson stalks into the newspaper office run by her ex-husband Walter Burns (Grant), you know it’s to tell him she’s getting remarried and leaving journalism to raise a family, and you know that’s not how it’s going to end. No high-suspense mystery here. What puts you on the edge of your seat in this film is how you get there. Hilariously acted and expertly filmed, His Girl Friday derives much of its comedic impact from the incredibly clever and lightning-fast banter of the characters. As a tear rolled down my cheek, it all began to make sense. The roller-coaster ride of highs and lows, presented via a mish-mash of out-of-sequence stages throughout the life of the vulnerable, yet incredibly strong, lead character, Jodie Holmes, had eventually led me to one of the finest video game endings of this generation. Though it was slow to get there (and I often questioned why I was forced to carry out seemingly meaningless Heavy Rain-like gestures, such as gathering hay for a horse at a ranch owned by ancestors of the Navajo tribe, cooking a romantic chicken curry in my lush city apartment for a work colleague, or dancing alone at a teenager’s party that I didn’t even want to be at), it turns out that it was all part of the master plan: Quantic Dream’s director David Cage was taking me on a journey; and what a journey it was.The conclusion to Beyond: Two Souls just seems so fitting and poignant at this particular time, when we sit at the birth of the next generation of consoles and the impending decline of the PlayStation 3. Maybe, just maybe, part of that tear I shed was because Beyond: Two Souls is the last big blockbuster exclusive before my PS3 gets shoved away in a cupboard to make way for the PlayStation 4. Whatever the case, the twist, the reveal and the immersive storytelling, which eventually leads to one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever had to make in a video game, has made for a truly memorable interactive movie that will stay with me for a long time. The main focus of Beyond is Jodie Holmes and a mysterious entity that floats and moves around while connected to her by an invisible cord. Jodie is a special child and through Aiden (who is also a controllable character via single player or co-op mode), she can perform a variety of supernatural tricks, such as flipping over tables, possessing people and communicating with the spirit world. The game follows Jodie through stages of her turbulent life, switching randomly between the ages of 8 and 23 as you see a re-enactment of important stages that have shaped her character, including the time she spent locked up in in a secure government facility where they monitored her supernatural abilities and the tough decisions she had to make during her career in the C.I.A.ContinuedBeyond Two Souls: Like Other Girls - YouTube

International Corp. Director: Herk Harvey | Run Time: 80 minutes Cast: Candace Hillgoss and Sidney Berger Though it only had a small release in its day, Carnival of Souls has since gained a large cult following with praise being given from filmmakers like David Lynch, George Romero, and Lucrecia Martel. Carnival of Souls follows Mary Henry, a young woman recovering from a car accident. After relocating to a new city, she finds herself experiencing visions of a ghoulish stranger and becoming entranced by an abandoned carnival. The movie plays like a lost Twilight Zone episode but uses German expressionist-style visuals to make a unique picture. Watch on Paramount+ Carrie (2013) Image via Sony Director: Kimberly Pierce | Run Time: 99 minutes Cast: Chloe Grace-Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer The 1976 version of Carrie shocked audiences across the world with the bold direction of Brian De Palma and the terrifying performance from actress Sissy Spacek, but it is the 2013 film version that adds a level of tragedy and understanding to make this story a classic. The movie follows an outcast teenage girl named Carrie (Chloe Grace-Moretz) who is hounded by her bullying classmates and abused by her religious mother. When she realizes she has supernatural powers, she finally gets to take revenge on all of her tormentors. Fans of the original may still be disgusted by the lasting image of prom queen Carrie and the bucket of pig's blood, but director Kimberly Pierce turns this feeling of disgust into pity. Watch on Paramount+ Jennifer’s Body (2009) Image Via 20th Century Fox Director: Karyn Kusama | Run Time: 102 minutes Cast: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons Though it was initially panned upon its release, Jennifer’s Body is one of the best horror comedies of the past 15 years. It follows two best friends, Needy (Amanda Seyfried), a bookish and innocent girl, and Jennifer (Megan Fox), a far more popular and experienced girl. After a traumatic encounter with abusive rockstars, Jennifer becomes demonically possessed and starts killing her former classmates and leaving Needy horrified. It’s hard to say what exactly made this film so unpopular in its day. It could have been the terrible marketing or the inability of critics to take Megan Fox seriously, but it has since become essential horror viewing because of its feminist take on an old story. Watch on Paramount+ The Blair Witch Project (1999) Image Via Artisan Entertainment Director: Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez | Run Time: 81 minutes Cast: Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, Joshua Leonard The Blair Witch Project changed the horror movie-making game. In the previous decades, the horror genre had become over-reliant on animatronic monsters and grand settings, but this low-budget flick showed that even with a cheap camera, non-professional monsters, and even no actual sign of the monster itself, a movie could still make your skin crawl. This classic follows three student filmmakers who hike into the Black Hills to film a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend. However,Beyond Two Souls (Like Other Girls) - YouTube
Easily kited.Put away your shield, you don't need it, and take your weapon in two hands for extra damage. When the fight starts, just stay where you are, it should belch out some yellowsmoke and drop to a prone position before rushing you. This is what we want it to do the entire fight.Get out of it's way and wait untill it stops, it will stay still for a few seconds which is your cue to lay on the hurt. Hit him a few times, 3 or 4 at most and then run away like a little girl getting a good distance in between. This will cause him to spew smoke again and start rushing. Repeat untill dead.As this is a dragon enemy, the first priority however is to cut of it's tail giving you the dragon king greataxe. this also takes away it's nasty tail swipe. The last thing to watch out for is his jumping attack. When hit dead-on, you'redead. When the fight is over you get 25k souls, the key to blighttown and you can pick up the hard leather armor set.+Boss+ QuelaagToo bad for the lower part of her body...When the fight starts, she will jump you and breathe lava, don't step in it.The easiest way to fight her is to just get close and bait her to do her swordattack, if you get to the right of her spider face up against her, she can't hit you, after the first strike, attack a few times and wait out her next move.If she stops moving completely, back off asap, she will do an AOE attack which hurts, get your shield up to absorb some of it.When she raises her legs, back off too, she will stomp the ground. She will also spit lava around the area, while she is spitting, this isanother good time to do some damage, just be carefull you don't get surrounded. If the part of the area you are fighting is getting covered in lava, just gosomewhere else, it's a large room with a lot of space to move around. You'll get 20k souls for beating her and the soul of Quelaag, whatever you do,DO NOT USE IT TO GET SOULS! Especially this one, because with the falchion wegot earlier, and this soul we will create the weapon we'll use for the remainder of the game.If somehow this fightis too hard, you can go to the fog in. This includes Gabriel Luna (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother and a hopeful former soldier, and Merle Dandridge as Marlene, head of a resistance movement, who is reprising her role from the video games.
