Yes.Is this a sequel? Kinda no.This is more of a sandbox than a linear game. The story here is 4-5hrs max. This game feels like Boneworks 1.1. Not even 2.0. Same wonky physics - that are supposed to be "like IRL" but in reality produce a mess of IK clipping and issues, combined with accelerated movement resulting in the "drunk puppeteering" feeling.Gun play is great. Alyx surpasses many VR titles in terms of visual fidelity. While games like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Boneworks offer impressive graphics, they do not match the intricate texture detail and advanced lighting techniques present in Alyx. The Source 2 engine’s optimization ensures that even with such high-level graphics, the game runs smoothly, maintaining a stable frame rate crucial for an immersive VR experience. One of the crowning achievements in Alyx’s visual design is the way it balances detail with performance. The Source 2 engine’s efficient rendering allows for rich, complex scenes without significant performance hitches. This is essential in VR, where any lag or stutter can break immersion and cause discomfort. Alyx’s smooth performance, even in graphically intense scenes, ensures an uninterrupted, immersive experience.Visual Fidelity Comparisons:FeatureHalf-Life: AlyxOther VR TitlesTexturesHighly detailedModerate detailLightingAdvanced GI and dynamic shadowsBasic lightingEnvironmental EffectsComplex, dynamicSimplifiedPerformance OptimizationHighVariableBy achieving such high visual standards, Half-Life: Alyx demonstrates the potential of VR technology to create breathtakingly immersive experiences. Its combination of detailed textures, realistic lighting, and dynamic environmental effects ensures that it remains a visually stunning masterpiece, setting a high bar for future VR games to aspire towards.Animgraph Animation SystemThe AnimGraph animation system in Half-Life: Alyx sets a new standard for animation quality in VR, creating characters and movements that feel authentic and lifelike. This system uses a node-based architecture that allows for the dynamic composition of animations, ensuring real-time reactions to player interactions and environmental conditions.Node-Based Structure: At the heart of the AnimGraph system is its node-based architecture, which functions much like a tree structure. Each node performs specific operations like blending animations, applying inverse kinematics (IK), or transitioning between animations. Picture this as a tree with branches representing different animation sequences. The roots receive input from the game environment such as player actions or AI behavior and the final animation is the result of these inputs being processed through the branches to produce a seamless motion.Parameters and Motors: AnimGraph uses parameters to contextualize animations. For example, if a character is running, the system considers speed, direction, and terrain type. These parameters are continuously updated, allowing characters to. (Image credit: Stress Level Zero)I remember the dawn of physics in games, and how exciting simply knocking something over was. It's hard to believe now, but for decades game worlds were largely static things. Film sets, basically. But then the likes of Deus Ex and Half-Life 2 came along, featuring realistic (well, ish) physics simulations that were an intrinsic part of the game. Whether it was JC Denton clumsily stacking slippy crates to climb over a fence, or Gordon Freeman hurling saw blades at zombies with the Gravity Gun, physics were the Next Big Thing. And then they weren't. They became the standard, and now you just accept it when things fall over realistically in a game. That's what they're supposed to do. But this week, having played several hours of a weird VR game called Boneworks, I'm excited by physics again. Not because developer Stress Level Zero does anything particularly groundbreaking with them, but because you're reaching into the game and manipulating a richly reactive, physics-based world with your own arms. Or at least a digital representation of them.Watch Andy messing with Boneworks' physics in the video above. My name-checking of Half-Life 2 isn't just for effect, because the developers of Boneworks are clearly Valve fans. The game is a curious mix of Portal and Half-Life 2, with (genuinely tricky) physics puzzles, and a very City 17 aesthetic in places. There are automated turrets and weird graffiti on the walls, you'll occasionally have to drop a cube on a pressure plate, and enemies turn into floppy ragdolls when you kill them. Even the humour is kinda Portal-like. But the important thing is that it feels inspired by Valve, not just a copy.It makes its own mark too, with brilliantly tactile, brutal melee combat, and some of the best virtual shooting around. Popping a spent magazine, grabbing another from your belt, and palm-slapping it into your gun feels hugely satisfying. The game is also surprisingly difficult. VR games are often dumbed down, or at least streamlined, so you can just enjoy the experience of being in their worlds. But Boneworks features proper puzzles and challenging combat, which is a nice change from the hand-holding a lot of VR games rely on.(Image credit: Stress Level Zero)I also like how the reactive, simulated nature of the world and the objects in it let you get creative. There are often multiple ways to get past an obstacle or solve a puzzle. In one section I had to get past a gun turret that, when it detected me, would kill me instantly. So I grabbed the lid of a garbage can, held it like a shield in front of me, crouched, and slipped past unharmed. The game never told me to do this; I just had a flash of inspiration, and it worked, and that felt amazing. There's an almost immersive sim-like quality to Boneworks at times, which gives it a level of depth I haven't experienced in many VR games. The downside of this is thatBoneworks Sucks! : r/boneworks - Reddit
Stress Level Zero has announced Bonelab, a sequel to Boneworks. Today’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase gave us a look at a slew of titles that we can look forward to playing on the popular VR headset. This included Bonelab, the follow-up to the VR hit Boneworks. Stress Level Zero has given our first look at the physics-based adventure game, which is currently aiming for a late 2022 release on Quest 2 and PC VR.The reveal trailer for Bonelab gives us a glimpse at the familiar world crafted by Stress Level Zero. The original game’s emphasis on physics and reality-shaping within the scope of VR is what set it apart, and appears to be on full display in the new trailer. Along with the announcement, the developer provided a synopsis of what we can expect from Bonelab.Outside of today’s announcement, not much else is known about Bonelab. That said, if it’s anything like the first game, it’ll be a must-watch VR release when it launches later this year. StoryBreakroom 🡢 Museum 🡢 Streets"Hello, and welcome to the Museum of Technical Demonstration."― Museum Guide VoiceMuseum of Technical Demonstration is a tutorial for MythOS.Description (Museum)Museum uses development textures, primarily in white and yellow tiling. Rooms are vast and sparse, containing nothing but the exhibits themselves, as it is technically under construction. Large, roboticized arms display various features, such as aiming and reloading. Skylights also feature heavily, as does promotional material from the Museum's various sponsors, including Trash Handlers Monogon and UltraMersion. Museum in MythOS City has no enemies and very little danger, though is filled with buttons, screens, and demonstrations of the MythOS mechanics. It features two floors, divided into several Halls, which show almost every aspect of BONEWORKS physics system.Description (Fantasy Museum)Branch of the museum in Fantasy Land is similar to the museum in MythOS City , but it looks like a dungeon and has no screens and has not many halls. Fantasy Museum has enemies and danger.HistoryThe Museum was created as a way for new users of MythOS to orient themselves in the simulation, and learn how the virtual reality operates. It serves as a successor to Library of OldMyth, and is officially presented as "a way to prepare the youth of tomorrow with the knowledge and history recorded throughout time." It appears to be operated outside of Monogon's jurisdiction, as it requires funding from third parties such as UltraMersion and ExoCorp.Collectables (BONEWORKS)ApolloApolloApollo{{{Amount}}}{{{Amount}}}{{{Amount}}}ApolloApolloNullbody Gachapon{{{Amount}}}{{{Amount}}}{{{Amount}}}A Brick and a Basketball are in the room with the Punching Bag.
