Distortion built into my head really just kinda sucked. So i decided to experiment with pedals and ended up getting a mxr fullbore metal pedal and that thing had no balls.. when i got this IMMEDIATELY i was impressed! Built like a tank and could take a beating.. if you're a metal musician looking to find a distortion pedal with BALLS this is your pedal!uhhhhhhhhhhhh....The empress heavy reminds me of the type of crunch that typically comes with a tube amp. I would say that this pedal even gives some tube amps a run for their money in the crunch and tweak-ability factor. It sounds great with my crate 4×12 cab with it's stock speakers, but sounded absolutely mean coming through a friend's Randall RD212-V30 combo which has Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. I think the coolest features of this pedal are the mid frequency switches, and the weight nob. I wanted a pedal that would allow me to boost my mids and still sound heavy, and this pedal does it for me. But I really like being able to adjust my bottom end sound. I can make it super tight, or pretty sludgy. (Wish it would go just a little sludgier though) The pedal has a built in noise gate, and it does what I expected. The noise gate will slightly effect the tone of the pedal if used, but it's pretty negligible. There are only two things about this pedal that are keeping me from giving it a 5 out of 5. Number 1. I want more gain/distortion out of it. It's not like you'd mistake it for a blues pedal or anything with the gain maxed out, make no mistake, this is a metal pedal. But more gain would be awesome. I might even put a tube screamer in front of it to see how it sounds. Number 2. The "heavier" channel on this pedal does not actually sound any heavier to me. All in all, it's still an awesome pedal. I think for this pedal to really shine you're going to want active pick ups to push the gain as far as possible, and a cab/combo with high end speakers to push all of the bite. I would consider this to be a stand alone pedal to be ran through a clean channel on your amp. I wouldn't run it through a gain channel to boost it. I would recommend this pedal to any one who has a solid state amp who wants a tube amp style crunch for metal. If you want an old school metallica tone, or a deathklok tone, this might work well for you.some guyNot a bad pedal at all. Just not worth

I bought this pedal from Scan computers in Bolton and their service was excellent and they offered the most competitive price, so all good imo.PeakThis is NOT an acoustic guitar pedal! It has useless settings for sax, harmonica, trumpet, WHY ? They're just a bunch of unusable effects for a guitar, maybe a half dozen are useful. The looper is useless, you have to use your hand to get to it, it ONLY records a 30sec loop, not 24 seconds not one measure , 30 sec. And it doesn't start with sound activation, so the delay from when you turn it on stays in the loop, as does the remainder of the 30 seconds !!! What good is that ? And the pedal is right next to a control footswitch, that you WILL keep hitting and changing the setting as you play. There is no rhyme or reason to the lack of organization in the effects order, there isn't any. Bottom line, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY !BadartdogThe main reason I bought this is that i had a Zoom 405 acoustic effects years ago and loved it. This has the same quality effects. The preset guitar types is surprisingly good, the EC preset is very very good. The rhythm is ok, standard level and useful for sure. The Boss HM-2 was laid to rest in 1991 when the last of the wannabe Marshall-amp in a box pedals rolled off the line…A puzzling pedal to some and downright hated by others, the funeral was not attended by many and met with a sigh of relief by those who loathed it’s buzz-saw brand of high-gain distortion.However there was a small group of loyal followers that grieved the death of this black and orange beast.Despite the drop in sales the pedal experienced causing Boss to cease production, a wide swath of bands gave the HM-2 a permanent residence on their pedal-boards. Swedish Death Metal legends like Entombed and Dismember had long ago made it an essential “always on” part of their setup while the Shoegazing bands from My Bloody Valentine to The Jesus and Mary Chain were using it to help craft their walls of distorted guitar noise chaos. Others saw it showingup under the feet of some of the most noted bands that emerged in the now historic grunge-wave of the nineties.Enter the Wren and Cuff Hangman 2D, a detailed recreation of Boss’ “Heavy Metal” pedal.With a circuit more complicated than many digital delays, and the ability for the average person to get an original HM-2 on ebay for pretty cheap, many may wonder why the hell we decided to remake this pedal.The answer? Because I (Matt) wanted to. As with many of our recreations, it became an obsession and difficult task to really nail the tone. As usual, it went way beyond getting a schematic. It became a task requiring ears and hours.Also, a hand-wired, hand-loaded, circuit board using 1/4 watt metal film resistors instead of the 1/8 watt carbon film on the original is a nice thing if you like this pedal. The noise floor becomes dramatically less, and colorful overtones become much more apparent. Surprisingly though, one trait it does not possess is the extreme scoop to the mids many associate with “Heavy Metal.” One of the secrets to it’s tone is the somewhat strange configuration of it’s “color mix” section.There is the “low” knob which functions as one would expect, and a high knob to help shape the tone. But the “high” knob is kind of an odd-ball in how it effects things. The preset guitar types is surprisingly good, the EC preset is very very good. The rhythm is ok, standard level and useful for sure. 2025-04-21The Boss HM-2 was laid to rest in 1991 when the last of the wannabe Marshall-amp in a box pedals rolled off the line…A puzzling pedal to some and downright hated by others, the funeral was not attended by many and met with a sigh of relief by those who loathed it’s buzz-saw brand of high-gain distortion.However there was a small group of loyal followers that grieved the death of this black and orange beast.Despite the drop in sales the pedal experienced causing Boss to cease production, a wide swath of bands gave the HM-2 a permanent residence on their pedal-boards. Swedish Death Metal legends like Entombed and Dismember had long ago made it an essential “always on” part of their setup while the Shoegazing bands from My Bloody Valentine to The Jesus and Mary Chain were using it to help craft their walls of distorted guitar noise chaos. Others saw it showingup under the feet of some of the most noted bands that emerged in the now historic grunge-wave of the nineties.Enter the Wren and Cuff Hangman 2D, a detailed recreation of Boss’ “Heavy Metal” pedal.With a circuit more complicated than many digital delays, and the ability for the average person to get an original HM-2 on ebay for pretty cheap, many may wonder why the hell we decided to remake this pedal.The answer? Because I (Matt) wanted to. As with many of our recreations, it became an obsession and difficult task to really nail the tone. As usual, it went way beyond getting a schematic. It became a task requiring ears and hours.Also, a hand-wired, hand-loaded, circuit board using 1/4 watt metal film resistors instead of the 1/8 watt carbon film on the original is a nice thing if you like this pedal. The noise floor becomes dramatically less, and colorful overtones become much more apparent. Add to that the usual Wren and Cuff luxuries of 100% mechanical, true hard-wired bypass, rugged all metal Alpha pots mounted directly to the chassis, a Modern and Vintage toggle switch, tough metal enclosure and gorgeous art work… And one can see the value of the Hangman 2 over the original.(*All of the references below apply to both the original HM-2 and our Hang Man 2D.)This pedal can go from super compressed, tight, smooth distortion, to a snarling buzz-saw monster that brings out every pick-to-string strike you throw at it. Surprisingly though, one trait it does not possess is the extreme scoop to the mids many associate with “Heavy Metal.” One of the secrets to it’s tone is the somewhat strange configuration of it’s “color mix” section.There is the “low” knob which functions as one would expect, and a high knob to help shape the tone. But the “high” knob is kind of an odd-ball in how it effects things. The high-mids are tied together so that the high knob is more of a upper-mids to treble control which can make getting great sounds out of it a bit tricky… but this
