If you limit yourself to professional equipment, things can get expensive quickly. Does that mean that 5.1 surround mixing is the exclusive domain of the rich and famous, or is there a way to do it on a real-world budget? By adding some consumer gear to your existing project studio, you can mix 5.1 surround for a lot less than you might think.To monitor 5.1-channel surround music in your studio, you need five full-range speakers and one subwoofer, amplifiers for the speakers and subwoofer, a volume control with bass management, and a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder so you can check that the final surround encoding worked.Fortunately, a modern home-theatre receiver (also called an A/V receiver) takes care of those major monitoring requirements (except the speakers and subwoofer) in one fell swoop. All home-theatre receivers include Dolby Digital or DTS decoders (or both), which accept a digital bitstream from a suitably encoded disc in an appropriately equipped DVD player and then convert it to six audio channels. In the studio, that conversion ability is important only for checking a file that has been encoded; it is not used during the mixing process. However, make sure that your receiver has both decoding types, just to cover your bases.More important for mix monitoring, all A/V receivers provide amplification for the five main channels, but few include an amplifier for the subwoofer, which means you'll need a powered sub. The software inconveniences most definitely drag down this otherwise enjoyable sound device, especially since the original Leviathan had physical buttons you could use to control the EQ.Bottom LineThe Razer Leviathan V2 is a great soundbar with volume, high treble, and a thumping subwoofer that leaves a lasting impression. Both the soundbar and the subwoofer have sleek, matte-black designs that will blend easily into any RGB-powered setup. The streamlined redesign comes at a cost, though — while the original Leviathan had more physical buttons, a 3.5mm jack, and an optical audio input, the V2 has none of these features. It does have Bluetooth, which is a nice addition, but Bluetooth sound quality can’t compete with a 3.5mm or optical connection. Also, while I love the V2’s new RGB lighting and software features, Razer Synapse 3 was so janky that I couldn’t really enjoy it. You may not face the exact same issues I did with Synapse 3, but it’s a finicky program that you’ll need to use if you want to fully experience the V2.At $249, the Leviathan V2 is somewhat pricey, but you’re paying for quality sound. If you’re looking for a new soundbar with more flexibility, also consider the Creative Sound BlasterX Katana, which also features a subwoofer, 7.1 Virtual Audio, and programmable RGB lighting but has physical buttons and more connectivity options. 2025-04-13If you're looking to measure a subwoofer unit with your 2.0 speaker setup, you can achieve this via daisy-chaining the speakers to the sub unit.Setting up a 2.0 subwoofer system for speaker measurementsYou can easily measure a speaker setup with an additional subwoofer unit. Simply route your L-R channels through the sub in a 2.0 stereo setup (daisy-chain). To do this, there will be input and output slots available at the back of the sub. In other words, if you are using the stereo version of the SoundID Reference Measure app, the subwoofer can NOT be routed on a third channel separately:How it worksWe are using the subwoofer's built-in crossover, which will take care of the low-frequency separation between the sub and the speakers. The speaker calibration profile will then work for the entire setup at any given volume. There will be no need to make any separate volume adjustments on the sub after completing the measurements.In fact, if you make adjustments on the sub separately after completing the measurements, you might need to recalibrate as the correction balance between the speakers and the sub has changed.Tips and tricksSetting up a subwoofer for the perfect measurement can be a little tricky, especially with all the physical settings options on the back of your subwoofer unit. Set the subwoofer level to your liking, perform the measurements and follow these tips:Don't change the speaker/subwoofer level and placement relations after calibratingIf the low-frequency correction is exceeding 6 dB, go back and turn down the subwoofer a little, then measure againIf you can't get a good reading and the applied correction seems extreme, you might have a problem with a room mode: try a slightly different placement for the sub and measure againIf the measurement suggests that there is still a problem/room mode present, try adjusting the available settings at the back of the sub (Crossover, Phase Inversion, LPF, etc.)Use the Limit Controls and Custom Target controls in the software to fine-tune the correction:Not enough bass after calibrating a subwoofer setup?If you are concerned about SoundID Reference cutting out too much bass from your sub, you can always adjust the correction using the Limit Controls and Custom Target controls in the software!However, it is most likely that the calibration profile is accurate, and your ears simply need some time to adjust to the change. If you still have doubts, simply test by working with the new calibration profile and see how your mixes translate - if the bass response is translating well on other playback systems, everything is working as intended and the calibration profile is accurate!
