[Complex] Armenian Five Star Brandy Sword I don’t always have those nights where I don’t know if I’m going to be casually drinking with my friend or disemboweling an old enemy, but when I do, I reach for Armenian Five Star Brandy Sword. Which apparently only costs about 40 bucks. [Value Spirits] Tommy Guns Vodka Oh good, we’re back to automatic weaponry-shaped booze. This Chicago-based distillery makes booze in the shape of a prohibition-era tommy gun. This stuff is almost definitely nasty but I’m kind of afraid to say so in case these guys come after me. [Drinking In America] Bollinger Bond 007 Champagne Can’t have all these booze-guns making a racket, right? Bollinger made these silencer-shaped cases for a limited edition champagne in honor of the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace. Each case has a lock and key so you can use it to store valuables once the champagne’s gone. Only 207 bottles were made, and they sold for $5,765 each, though, so they kind of qualify as valuables in their own right. At the same time, whiskey drinkers naturally take to aged tequilas like añejo and extra añejo due to their longer barrel aging. As a result, reposado tequila is often ignored. But there is a wide world of reposado tequilas out there with a range of flavors to discover. Our reposado tequila guide puts a spotlight on this Mexican spirit so you can be prepared for your next purchase.Tequila 101We’ll begin with a quick primer on the tequila category itself. Tequila can only be made in designated areas in the following states of Mexico: Jalisco, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Tamaulipas. All tequilas are made with Blue Weber agave, a specific agave type from the dozens that grow in Mexico.Also, there are two categories of tequila: 100% agave tequila and mixto tequila which requires just 51% agave. The former is considered the more pure tequila expression by tequila drinkers. Thankfully the market has directed producers to focus on 100% agave tequilas over mixtos in recent years.Importantly, mixto tequilas are not labeled as such.
